Energy, Natural Resources and Environmental Law

For years, LEX has been at the forefront of energy, natural resources, and environmental law, and is home to one of the most experienced teams in Iceland in these practice areas.

The utilization of natural resources, whether for energy production or other purposes, present numerous challenges. Such endeavours must, for example, balance the interests of utilization against those of environmental conservation, while also addressing the needs of stakeholders such as landowners, municipalities, residents, businesses, and the tourism industry.
Climate change, population growth, and a significant increase in the number of tourists visiting Iceland, have all played a part in shaping the regulatory environment. In addition, Iceland’s international commitments, mainly through the EEA Agreement, have greatly influenced its regulatory framework, leading to ambitious energy-transition goals and requirements for responsible utilization of the nature and its resources.
At LEX you will find specialists that have extensive experience in advising on—and safeguarding interests related to—geothermal and wind energy, land, water, and mining rights. The firm does also support clients in applying for and obtaining licenses for various forms of resource utilization, energy production, and related activities. Beyond that, the firm counsels municipalities, landowners, and developers on land use and planning in connection with resource development or nature and environmental protection, and provides legal advice regarding environmental impact assessments for projects and plans.
Finally, we bring deep expertise in electricity matters and the construction of transmission systems, as well as expropriation, waste management, emissions, and pollution. We also assist with development and commercial operations in national parks and other protected areas and represent our clients before administrative authorities and courts.
In recent years, LEX has been involved in advising all major energy companies, municipalities, the government and governmental agencies in issues within this practice area.
