LEX litigators continue to receive recognition.

In the newly published Chambers Global rankings, Arnar Þór Stefánsson has been placed in the highest category of litigators in Iceland, confirming his and LEX’s standing in the Icelandic legal arena. For years, Arnar Þór has been regarded as one of Iceland’s leading attorneys, having been entrusted with highly complex cases before the Icelandic courts. In recent years, many of Iceland’s largest companies and wealthiest individuals have been among his clients.
Another litigator at LEX who receives positive coverage from Chambers is Kristín Edwald—a recognition that comes as no surprise, especially in light of the Supreme Court’s recent landmark ruling in the Retailers’ Pension Fund case, issued in favor of LEX’s client.
In other news, on February 9, the Labor Court (Félagsdómur) rendered a judgment in the case of the Association of Local Municipalities in Iceland versus the Icelandic Teachers’ Union. LEX’s attorney, Óskar Sigurðsson, represented the Association together with Hjalti Geir Erlendsson, Sigurður Ágústsson, and Heiður Heimisdóttir. As is well known, the Labor Court broadly accepted LEX’s clients’ arguments in this important case, ruling that the Teachers’ Union’s strikes—save for one—were unlawful.
February has also brought favorable outcomes for clients of LEX litigator Guðjón Ármannsson. On February 5, the Environment and Natural Resources Complaints Committee issued its ruling in the case of Náttúrugriði versus Landsvirkjun (The Icelandic National Power Company), in which Guðjón represents Landsvirkjun. The Committee rejected Náttúrugriði’s demands that the operating license for the Búrfellslundur project be revoked. On February 6, the Court of Appeal (Landsréttur) delivered its judgment in the case of Magnús Pétur Hjaltested versus the Municipality of Kópavogur, another of Guðjón’s clients. In all key aspects, the Court upheld LEX’s client’s claims, and it is hoped that this ruling will bring an end to the long-running disputes regarding Vatnsendi.
